Description:

The career counselor works with students, employers, faculty, staff and alumni. The career counselor assists undergraduate, graduate students, and alumni in career decision making, developing effective resumes and cover letters, interviewing skills, job search strategies, and other career related topics. The career counselor works with the department to plan and execute career related programs and events and plays a critical role in preparing Barry University students to be caring professionals who make a difference in their post-graduate careers.

Encourages learning through courses, appointments, and presentations and teaches students to reflect on positions to find the right fit, including finding a way to serve the community in post-graduate life.

Responsibilities:

  • Counsels individuals, groups of students and alumni regarding career related issues (resume and cover letter writing, interview skills, networking, job search techniques, etc.) by meeting individually with students and also presenting to classes and clubs/organizations, including administration and interpretation of career assessments.
  • Coordinates industry specific and campus wide career related events by contacting employers, marketing to students, and assisting in overall logistics and setup.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with faculty across campus with special emphasis on liaison areas, by requesting one on one meetings, emailing departmental listeners, hosting faculty appreciation events, and participating in the career services faculty advisory board.
  • Outreaches and networks with campus community and local, regional and national employers to cultivate and maintain professional relationships by participating on campus committees and councils as well as attending community events.
  • Supervise graduate research assistants for marketing/event planning and media relations by assigning work tasks and meeting regularly to plan marketing techniques and enhancements.
  • Teach one section of ORI 300, Career Readiness, a one credit course.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Counseling/Higher Education/Student Affairs/Human Resource Development or related field.
  • 1 - 3 years of related experience.
