ASCA Member Highlight: Michelle Stevens
We're excited to introduce ASCA Member Highlights. This new monthly feature, included in each edition of ASCA Aspects, will showcase the great works of ASCA members.

This month's member highlight is Michelle Stevens. Stevens is an elementary school counselor at Kemp Elementary in Powder Springs, Ga., and Georgia's 2018 school counselor of the year. In her role, Stevens has created ways to connect with families by offering quarterly parenting workshops to build community relationships and boost parents’ skills, based on assessed needs. Topics have included digital citizenship and bulling prevention, with speakers from Cobb Prevention and Intervention, school psychologists, tutoring facilities, nutritionists and community counselors.

Stevens also supports college and career education for elementary students with a Careers on Wheels program and College Day. “Students at the college, university and secondary schools speak about life in the day of a college student. The elementary students are captivated…These presentations explain what students need to do from elementary to high school in order to be college ready,” Stevens said.

Practicing school counselors, school counseling faculty and students can also use the site’s tools to identify a partner for research collaboration. “Practitioner Summaries” introduce you to new research studies published in ASCA’s Professional School Counseling journal. And, if you’re planning to apply for RAMP, SCALE links to current RAMP schools’ reports. ASCA is continuously adding new tools and resources so check back often.

New Research Reports and Infographics
Earlier this month, ASCA released two new grant-funded research reports that substantiate how low student-to-school-counselor ratios in K-12 schools positively affect student outcomes. The reports Measuring the Impact of School Counselor Ratios on Student Outcomes and ASCA National Model Implementation and Appropriate School Counselor Ratios Promote More Informed College Decision-Making obtained data using online surveys and direct examination of school districts in Indiana, Connecticut and Ohio. Read the reports, and download the accompanying infographics at www.schoolcounselor.org/effectiveness

New book from Dr. Russell Sabella - School Counselor Side Hustle

Not just for school counselors; all types of counselors, human services practitioners, educators, and similar professionals will benefit. Enjoy!
Broke is no joke. School counselors and educators play a vital role in the success of our students and of our future. And yet, they continue to be financially undervalued and underpaid, struggling to make ends meet on an educator’s salary.

Perhaps in our lifetimes, we will see all educators in the United States be treated more respectfully and professionally, especially when it comes to salary, benefits, and working conditions. Other countries do this already. But until that time, many of us need to monetize our unique time and talents beyond the classroom to gain greater financial freedom.
This book spotlights several school counselors and educators who are already doing it. Their stories will help inspire you and give you insights into how side hustling is done. Our side hustle spotlights share the valuable lessons they have learned and then give us sage advice. School Counselor Side Hustle covers seven main areas which include:
  • Creating Resources
  • Authoring a Book
  • Public Speaking
  • Developing Tools
  • Selling Merchandise
  • Adjunct Teaching
  • Private Practice Counseling
You’ll also learn about many other side hustles and side jobs that school counselors are currently engaging in that go beyond our “Big Seven.” And, we cover the “nuts and bolts” of side hustle development from beginning to end in a practical way. From setting up your company to promoting your product or service, this book gives you the detailed information you need to start a side hustle or get your existing one to the next level.

Douglas County School District (just south of Denver) is currently hiring 60 school counselors ...

Douglas County School District (just south of Denver) is currently hiring 60 school counselors at the elementary, middle and high school level.  This is the result of a successful Mill Levy Override that passed in November.  At the high school and middle school level, we are reducing our ratios to ASCA recommended ratios of 250 students to one counselor and we are adding a counselor to every elementary school in the district.  We offer excellent working conditions, competitive salaries and supportive work situations will allow you to be the kind of counselor you dreamed you could be when you were in grad school!  These are permanent jobs and not grant funded.

If you have considered moving to Colorado to work as a counselor, there has never been a better time than now.  Please feel free to email me with any questions and either myself or one of our fantastic counselors will get back to you: abragon@dcsdk12.org .  To apply, please click here and type in "counselor" in the search field.  This will bring up a number of positions and we are posting more every day.
