ACTION ALERT: 2016 CACREP Standards

AMHCA
ACTION ALERT
The second draft of the 2016 CACREP Standards
is now available to the public for comments

Response deadline: January 10, 2014
As you know, what makes our association distinct among the other counseling organizations is the predominance of clinical practitioners among AMHCA's membership. Consequently, when CACREP addresses changes in the training standards for clinical mental health counselors, AMHCA, as an organization, offers a response. However, beyond the formal AMHCA organizational response, our members' and other stakeholders' individual opinions also carry significant weight and their voices need to be heard. After all, who better to offer an opinion about training standards than active clinical practitioners?

AMHCA's CACREP Committee is asking that those AMHCA clinical mental health counselors and AMHCA members that hold faculty positions in clinical mental health programs, wishing to contribute to the development of the new CACREP training standards do so by January 10, 2014, the deadline set by CACREP. You'll find links to download the AMHCA CACREP Committee's detailed response below. We encourage you to use it as a guide when you respond.

You'll note that the formal response offered by AMHCA's CACREP Committee was limited to the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Standards - Feedback Survey. Feel free to cut and paste any or all of the response offered by the AMHCA CACREP Committee, personalize the AMHCA response with examples from your clinical practice, or respond in your own words. What the AMHCA CACREP Committee feels is most important is that our members, with years of practical clinical experience, add their weight into this public comment opportunity. Again, who better to offer an opinion about training standards than active clinical practitioners?

The process of submitting a contribution is relatively easy. You begin by going to CACREP's feedback website. As mentioned on their website, "CACREP suggests reading two documents in their entirety prior to beginning any feedback survey." The first document is A Guide to Reviewing Draft 2, which offers an overview of the major changes made to the Standards. The second is a copy of Draft 2 of the 2016 CACREP Standards. Preceding each survey you will be asked to provide some basic demographic information. Then, read the standard, or group of standards, and indicate in the text box provided if you believe the standard(s) should be revised. Note that each text box has a 500 word limit.

If you have any questions about the feedback process or experience any technical problems on the CACREP website, please contact the CACREP office at cacrep@cacrep.org. If you have any questions about AMHCA organizational response, please contact the AMHCA CACREP Committee Chair, Keith Mobley at k_mobley@uncg.edu.

Groundbreaking Federal Interagency Report on Women and Trauma-informed Approaches
You are invited to download a groundbreaking report, Trauma-informed Approaches: Federal Activities and Initiatives—the second and highly anticipated Working Document Report of the Federal Partners Committee on Women and Trauma. Completed on September 30, 2013, the report documents the projects, programs, and initiatives of more than three dozen federal agencies, departments, and offices—one of the largest interagency collaborations in federal government history.  With agencies’ commitment to implementing gender-responsive, trauma-informed approaches, this report addresses the growing national interest in this issue, the work of the Federal Partners Committee, and the specific progress that participating agencies have made over the past  three years (2010-2013), since the Committee’s publication of its first report in 2011. This new report, developed with support from SAMHSA’s National Center for Trauma-Informed Care, clearly demonstrates the application of trauma-informed approaches across a wide range of settings and systems and encourages other governmental and nongovernmental agencies to implement a cross-sector, interagency, inter-systems’ realization, recognition, and response to trauma.  Download the report through the links below.

Counseling Program at Mercer University is seeking qualified applicants for the Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision

College of Continuing and Professional Studies
Department of Counseling and Human Sciences

The Counseling Program at Mercer University is seeking qualified applicants for the
Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision  for Fall semester 2014

The program admits 12 candidates once a year.  Applications must be completed by January 31, 2014 to be considered for admission.  Every student admitted receives graduate assistantships with a stipend and other teaching and supervision opportunities.

The Counseling program’s mission at Mercer University is based upon a fundamental belief in the diversity, dignity, and inherent worth of all human beings and in the central role education plays in a democratic society. The Counseling faculty actively supports the College of Continuing and

Professional Studies’ commitment to quality instruction and community service.
Doctoral training extends beyond course content hours and field experiences. Doctoral students learn to examine critically the state of the art, to generate research inquiries, and to advance the profession of counseling through oral and written contributions.

The Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision is unique as students are required to complete a counseling cognate as well as an 18 hour cognate in another discipline of interest to the student.  A broad interdisciplinary base at Mercer allows for great breadth in academic pursuits for doctoral students. The doctoral level counselor represents a "scientist practitioner" model and should be both consumer and producer of research. Doctoral degree requirements in counseling are rigorous. The selection process for admission to the program considers this factor. Students admitted to the program have convinced the selection committee of potential for successful program completion.

Our 11 Full-time faculty members offer a wealth of experience in teaching, mentoring, and research, and serve as leaders in both state and national counseling organizations.  The program faculty’s expertise allows students to develop in-depth knowledge of numerous counseling specialty areas.
The Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision program is offered with evening classes on the Atlanta, GA, campus of Mercer University.  With over 5 million people in the metro Atlanta area and the world’s busiest airport, Atlanta is not only ‘the crossroads of the south’ but is an international city, offering our students a great diversity of personal, clinical, and professional opportunities.
