Synopsis

The Director of Guidance Counseling provides a guidance communication link to the administrative team as well as provides leadership and supervision to the Guidance department.  The Director of Guidance Counseling will support the school vision by coordinating and supervising guidance activities that are designed to assist students in excel in their personal, social and intellectual development.

The Role

The Director of Guidance Counseling designs, implements and evaluates the school guidance and counseling program.  The Director will maintain effective communications with the admissions offices and agencies that communicate directly with the parents.  In addition, the Director will work closely with the school administration in the providing regular updates and disseminating a comprehensive description of the school Guidance Program including policies, procedures and other components.  The Director will oversee and coordinate the cumulative academic records of each student to ensure the NYS high school diploma requirements are being met and implements proper action plans for credit recovery. Provides for articulation of the guidance program by conducting regular meetings with the guidance counselors and conducts in-service training.  The Director participates in frequent administrative and curricula meetings for administrators, supervisors, and department chairs.

Requirements

·       Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred

·       Demonstrate a “can-do” attitude

·       Experience in independent school boarding life preferred

·       Demonstrated successful experience in working with adolescents in an educational setting

·       Excellent organizational and human relations skills

·       Be able to organize work and set priorities to meet changing deadlines

·       Be able to establish and maintain effective working relationship with all constituents

·       Have a pleasant and collegial approach to work and, ideally, a sense of humor
