Rick Phillips is Executive Director and Founder of Community Matters, a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to collaborate with schools and communities in creating safe and inclusive environments where all youth and adults thrive. Rick has been interviewed on The Today Show and CNN Headline News and is the lead author of: Safe School Ambassadors: Harnessing Student Power to Stop Bullying and Violence (Jossey-Bass/Wiley, 2008) and “Ten Years after Columbine: School Violence-Prevention Report Card.” Keynote: Whole School Climate: Creating Safer and Bully-Free Schools from the Inside-Out  Despite national efforts bullying, harassment and cyber-bullying continues to negatively impact our schools, affecting student achievement, behavior and the overall school climate. Making schools safer requires a whole school climate change approach. This presentation will introduce a blueprint for building safer, successful and high performing schools. We will explore best practice models, resources and programs and activities that achieve systemic and sustainable results in these challenged times.

Dr. Joyce V. Brown is an experienced educator with forty years of professional experience in the areas of student development and school counseling. Her 34 year school level career was spent at Kenwood Academy, a large urban public school in Chicago, Illinois, where she created numerous programs focused on student leadership, curriculum development and student engagement. In 2004, she became a district administrator and joined the CPS Department of Postsecondary Education and Student Development, as Manager of Secondary School Counselors. In this capacity she provided professional development to over 400 high school counselors that supported the realignment of their work to the data driven American School Counseling Association (ASCA) national model. She currently serves as a CPS Counseling Consultant, Ed Trust Consultant and Consultant to the College Board National Office of School Counseling Advocacy (NOSCA). She is President and CEO of the recently founded Academy for Counselor College and Career Readiness that provides professional development workshops focused on drop out prevention and college matriculation to schools and school districts. Dr. Brown is a national board certified counselor (NBCT) and a recognized counselor leader. Her research area is grade 8 to grade 9 transitions and she has developed a 12 Touch Freshman Transition Model. She has presented at numerous local and national conferences and holds a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership from Northern Illinois University. Keynote: Lead With The End In Mind: Ensuring College Readiness, Access and Success for All Students  The national education reform agenda calls for increased college and career readiness for all students. Embracing the ASCA framework of Advocacy, Leadership, Collaboration and Systemic Change, school counselors must become visionary leaders and implement interventions that close student achievement gaps and support increased student achievement. Whether you are a new counselor or a seasoned veteran, your action plan must include effective data-driven leadership practices. This session will highlight counselor leadership strategies resulting in students acquiring the knowledge and skills required to graduate college and career ready.
