Replacing the term "guidance counselor"
At it's general membership meeting on Saturday, October 6, 2012, the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) moved to study how it refers to the term school counselor in an effort to eliminate the terms guidance counselor, guidance office and guidance programs in its literature. Further the study would look at ways to encourage its K-12 and collegiate members to change the terminology which is used when describing and referring to school counselors. While the motion does not immediately eliminate the language per se, it will at least provide dialogue and discussion among its 13,000 members about the terms that are used and hopefully produce positive changes to reflect the current thinking in our profession.
