It’s been quite a year in Florida –
Hurricane Irma impacted most of the state, Hurricane Maria devastated
Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, and the shooting at Marjory
Stoneman Douglas High School shook the community and re-ignited a
national debate on safety in our schools. Communities have seen
neighborhoods disappear, rivers flowing where city streets were, an
influx of thousands of students that needed to be welcomed into schools
mid-year, and students wrestling with how to go on after their world
and their sense of safety were shattered.
Through it all, community members and leaders throughout Florida
answered the call to provide support for students impacted by these
extraordinary events. Now more than ever we want to recognize
those who didn’t need to be told to step in and help.
