General Information            
The Director for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) & Interprofessional Services for Learning Assessment (ISLA) at James Madison University manages and directs the university’s training clinics for developing clinical and mental health professionals. The Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) Clinic at James Madison University (JMU) is part of the Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services (IIHHS) and the Department of Graduate Psychology at JMU. CAPS is a teaching, service, and research clinic that is dedicated to promoting health and wellbeing by providing behavioral health services. CAPS offers affordable outpatient mental health services to our community while providing graduate students in psychology experience in assessment and treatment for a wide range of mental health issues. CAPS provides individual, couple, and family counseling across the lifespan as well as psychological assessment, testing, and consultation. CAPS consists of multiple clinic sites including an on-campus clinic and partner sites including local primary health clinics. ISLA provides training opportunities, psychological assessment, testing and consultation.
The Director of CAPS/ISLA works with program directors from the Department of Graduate Psychology’s Counseling programs, School Psychology program, and Combined-Integrated Clinical and School Psychology program to identify and provide practice, practicum, and internship opportunities for masters, educational specialist, and doctoral students. The ideal candidate will recognize the importance of valuing all of the department’s training programs equally, understanding the strengths of various disciplines represented within a clinical setting. The position involves frequent handling of confidential information and records. The director works on a regular basis with students, faculty, staff, administrators, primary healthcare professionals, community-based organizations, and governmental agencies.
The director holds a faculty position within the Department of Graduate Psychology. The position of director of CAPS/ISLA is a full-time, 10-month tenure track clinical faculty appointment. The successful candidate will demonstrate a potential for teaching, research, and service.
The ideal applicant will have a strong understanding of counseling and clinical approaches to training. The Director of CAPS/ISLA will provide support to faculty and students who practice a wide variety of treatment approaches. The ideal applicant will also understand the role of research in a clinical setting and work with department and IIHHS leaders to advance research protocols and procedures within CAPS/ISLA.
Duties and Responsibilities 
• Manage and direct CAPS which includes counseling/psychotherapy, psychological assessment, testing and consultation training and services.
• Manage and direct ISLA which includes psychological assessment, testing and consultation training and services, interprofessional consultation, and supervision of a screening and referral graduate assistant who coordinates with the Office of Disability Services (ODS). 
• Coordinate closely with ODS regarding student needs
• Provide leadership, develop, plan, and oversee the implementation of training and research opportunities for new and continuing students.
• Explore and develop community partnerships that enhance interprofessional training opportunities. 
• Provide leadership to the development and expansion of integrated primary and behavioral health training opportunities for graduate students. 
• Provide clinical supervision for Graduate Psychology students through the director position and the Department of Graduate Psychology’s course structure (e.g. practica, internship) according to one’s professional license.
• Teach within one’s area of expertise.
• Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures; identify opportunities for improvement in delivery models, for applicability to our child, student and adult populations, and efficiency in maximizing the impact of the resources devoted to these services.
• Assist the Dean, Associate Dean and Academic Unit Head with strategic planning and assessment to advance department and college mission.
• Develop and administer CAPS/ISLA protocols and procedures in keeping with current best-practices for clinical and counseling training centers.
• Monitor counseling and clinical assignments and communicate with program directors to ensure students are receiving adequate training hours.
• Participate in budget preparation and administration; prepare cost estimates for budget recommendations; monitor and control expenditures.
• Ensure all areas supervised comply with federal and state regulations.
• Perform personnel management functions in accordance with university policies and procedures, including oversight of personnel selection, training, and evaluation; ensuring clinic practices are in compliance with college policy; and analyzing and recommending appropriate staffing levels.
• Collaborate and coordinate with the IIHHS Associate Director for Clinical and Interprofessional Programs on clinical and community program partnerships, program developmental and interprofessional practice opportunities.
Qualifications       
Minimum Qualifications
• Doctoral degree in Counseling or Clinical Psychology
• Current and valid Clinical Psychologist Licensure in Virginia (or license-eligible); or LCPC or LPC licensure (or license-eligible). Must maintain licensure during entire employment as Director of CAPS/ISLA
• Demonstrated record of supporting research development, grants or other record of own research productivity
• Familiarity with clinical, higher education, and legal issues pertaining to ADA, FERPA, and HIPPA
• Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, physically challenged, and ethnic backgrounds of community members and college students
• Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team; excellent written and oral communications skills
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience within a clinical training setting
• Experience with graduate level teaching
• Three (3) years of progressively responsible leadership in higher education or a clinical setting, including staff supervision and budget management.
