ASCA Statement on "Varsity Blues"

Operation Varsity Blues, announced by the FBI last week, exposes a shameful and appalling vision not only of college admissions, but of American society. As the wealth gap continues to widen some seek to perpetuate inequality by using wealth and privilege to subvert hard work and determination.

School counselors know education is still the great equalizer. School counselors have always believed college admission is not a prize but another step in lifelong learning. School counselors help students find the postsecondary education that’s the best fit, not the one that brings the most prestige.

In light of this report, we need to be even more diligent about removing systemic inequality that rewards some students at the expense of others. Just as importantly, we need to encourage students to persevere when it feels like their road is endlessly winding and uphill while others seem to coast effortlessly. All students need postsecondary education, and all students have the opportunity for postsecondary success.

ASCA has long advised parents to allow their children to direct their own college search. This not only helps ensure that students select the postsecondary education that fits them best, it sends the message that parents have confidence in the students’ abilities and judgment.

I hope Operation Varsity Blues sends a loud warning about the direction of America as a culture. The road of democracy is paved with the principles of upward mobility and equal opportunities for all. We cannot allow those who have prospered on the journey to block the path from others.

Sincerely,
Kwok-Sze Richard Wong
