Special Issue Guest Co-Editors:
Anneliese A. Singh, Ph.D., LPC (The University of Georgia) and Joseph G. Kosciw (GLSEN)

This special issue of PSC will focus on efforts to ensure safe and affirming schools for LGBTQ students and its purpose is to add to the professional knowledge base about “what works” in developing safer school settings for LGBTQ students. Special issue articles will focus on empirical research on the role that professional school counselors play in transforming school environments to be LGBTQ-culturally responsive settings.

In particular, this PSC special issue seeks research on the role that professional school counselors play in transforming school environments to be LGBTQ-culturally responsive settings, including empirical and translational research on:

·      Direct support for LGBTQ students

·      School-level interventions;

·      The school-community interface

·      Professional development and training for school counselors on LGBTQ issues

·      Policy advocacy on behalf of LGBTQ students

PSC Special Issue Guest Co-Editors
Anneliese A. Singh, Ph.D., LPC is an associate professor and scholar-activist in the Department of Counseling and Human Development Services at The University of Georgia. Her clinical, research, and advocacy interests focus on the resilience of historically marginalized people and communities, including queer and trans youth, people of color, and survivors of trauma. Dr. Singh has conducted participatory action research and interventions in middle school aimed at reducing anti-LGBTQQ bullying and violence. She is a co-founder of the Georgia Safe Schools Coalition, an organization dedicated to reducing the intersections of transprejudice and homoprejudice with racism and other oppressions in Georgia schools.

Joseph G. Kosciw, Ph.D. is the Chief Research & Strategy Officer at GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network. Dr. Kosciw worked as a professional school counselor and psychoeducational consultant in elementary and secondary schools. Dr. Kosciw has been involved with GLSEN’s research initiatives since 1999 and developed and has led the department since 2003. Under his leadership, GLSEN Research focuses on understanding the school experiences of all students, specifically as they are related to issues regarding sexual orientation and gender identity/expression, the school experiences of LGBT parents, perceptions of educators and school administrators regarding school climate, and the utility of school- and community-based efforts regarding bullying and harassment and efforts to create safe and affirming learning environments.
