We would like to offer your students a safe and fun way to earn their volunteer hours. Our family runs a haunted house to benefit Harry Chapin Food Bank and Animal Refuge Center. This is the 9th year. We staff the event with students who are working on their volunteer hours needed for Florida Bright Futures, college and graduation requirements. Could you post this notice so your students will know about this opportunity?
Last year Fox 4, Fort Myers News Press, FGCU and WINK news all did news stories on our event. Several schools and students received acknowledgement for their contributions. I am listed with United Way so all volunteers receive credible hours and a letter for their files. We even feed them on the weekend shifts.
We are looking for hardworking and creative volunteers 15 years of age and up. Special arrangements can be made for students aged 12-14 if their parents attend with them. Work requires climbing short ladders and working outside in a tent. It is usually hot and labor intensive but very rewarding and creative.
Last year we had over 1500 people attend the event and collected over 1650 pounds of food. The students accrued an amazing 600 volunteer hour and we currently have over 4,000 people watching the website waiting for this year's grand event. It is very safe, my husband and I are both EMT's and firefighters, and have children and grandchildren or our own.
Any student can volunteer any amount of time, however if they would like to be a "scarer" in the haunted yard or house will need to put in a minimum of 15 or 30 hours, respectively. Please email Shar at Sharhingson@gmail.com or text 239.340.6569 with student name, phone number and start date to secure your position on the roster. Last year the spots filled up and we had to turn students away.
Sincerely,
Shar Hingson, MSM
