A couple of years ago we started a
program at the Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) to teach
empathy and compassion. This project, called Roots of Compassion
and Kindness (ROCK), has now gained center status and our growth
continues. So far ROCK is offering six college level classes that teach about
empathy and compassion. The college students complete their service
hours by bringing what they learn in class to schoolchildren.
Learning about kindness and compassion has made an enormous
difference in both the college students and the schoolchildren.
Teachers have reported improved relationships with peers and
improvements in the academic markers. Research is underway.

The center is developing research, connecting with other programs
with similar visions and missions and expanding its reach beyond
the university and the schools. We invite you to participate in the
upcoming trainings February 25 and 26th. There is no cost to you.
You can participate via Zoom or in person (at the FGCU). There are
three public sessions, two on Friday, one on Saturday morning.
Please register ahead of time because the space is limited.
