Full-time position for 2016-17 academic year. This is a 10 month plus 20 day position, beginning August 15, 2016. The counselor will report to the Upper School Principal.
The counselor provides faculty training and support for student concerns, oversees transition of new students, develops and teaches health and wellness curriculum, and is a member of the Student Support Teams. The counselor works closely with the Learning Specialists and Coordinator of Health Services (School Nurse) to provide academic, social, and emotional support for students in grades 9-12 and their families, and provides crisis counseling as needed. Additional responsibilities include working with students one-on-one and in group settings to provide short-term counseling, working with families to provide referrals and resources, and serving as the liaison with outside mental health professionals.

The counselor teaches Life Skills classes that focus on social emotional development. Through class discussions and engaging activities, the Life Skills curriculum emphasizes building self-awareness and interpersonal skills, defining personal values, problem solving and self-care. 

Candidates for this position should be familiar with independent or International school education, and have at least 3 years’ experience in a school setting, with significant experience in addressing the psychological, social, and emotional issues that affect adolescents in a multicultural setting.

A Master’s Degree in school counseling is preferred, especially those who obtained their degree from a CACREP certified school. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, possess a strong background in working with adolescents and their families, work effectively with both students and adults, feel comfortable taking the lead in identifying areas of need, and work collaboratively with teams. Some fluency in French or Spanish is preferred but not required.

The Director of Counseling provides information and guidance to students, parents, and colleagues about career, college, personal and educational services available to students in grades Pre-K through 12.
  • Oversee Counseling program including policy, planning, development and budget of pre-k through grade 12
  • Experience in case and process supervision of counseling staff
  • Proficient in college counseling.  Work with students in grades nine through twelve and their parents regarding the entire college selection, application, and admission procedure
  • Provide individual counseling/group counseling including: goal-setting/decision-making, academic, college, and career planning, scheduling, transition planning, coping strategies, education in understanding of self
  • Proficient in personal, career and college counseling
  • Knowledge of tests and measurement
  • National Certified Counselor and/or state certification
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as Secondary School Counselor and Department Chair
