Now accepting applications for the School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling programs.

Now accepting applications for the School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling programs.

Some quick facts about the FGCU counseling graduate programs and our graduates:
  • There are more school counseling and clinical mental health counseling jobs available in Southwest Florida right now than we have available professionals.
  • Most of our graduates are hired before they even graduate! All of our students seeking jobs are hired within 3 months of graduation -- most before graduation, some right afterwards.
  • The FGCU graduate program in school counseling is Department of Education approved and both the school counseling and clinical mental health counseling programs are nationally accredited (CACREP). This is a big deal. It means that you can get to work right away and your degree is highly portable.
  • Typically students attend their courses in the early evenings so you would not have to quit your day job. The Department offers a standard plan of study for students who are working and an accelerated plan of study for students who can take on a greater work load and finish in two years.
  • Several of our courses are "blended" or "hybrid." This means that some traditional face-to-face classes are replaced by online learning activities. This way, we can take advantage of the best features of both face-to-face and online learning.
  • The Department of Counseling also offers a certificate in Relationship and Family Counseling.
  • School Counseling: Graduates from this program work in public and private schools that serve PK-12 students and some work in postsecondary institutions including career and technical centers, special training programs for youth, colleges, and universities.
  • Clinical Mental Health Counseling: Graduates from this program work in community agencies, mental health settings, and private practices after graduation and most seek and achieve licensure.
  • The Department includes an on-campus counseling center as well as funds for student professional development opportunities.

New at FGCU: Relationship and Family Counseling

The FGCU Department of Counseling is
pleased to announce a new postmaster’s opportunity for professionals in counseling or a closely related practice field who have a master’s degree and may already be licensed in a related profession: Relationship and Family Counseling.

What and When? Starting with a course in the Fall of 2017, MHS 6445 Introduction to Relationship and Family Counseling on Tuesday evenings, students can decide to apply for and complete a full certificate or simply add the knowledge to their professional practice from this individual course.

Why? Over the years, student, community, and alumni demand has grown.  Now, with a minimum of 12 graduate credits, students in this non-degree certificate can add the knowledge and competencies of relationship and family counseling to their current practice and potentially add a Florida license in Marriage and Family Therapy (see http://floridasmentalhealthprofessions.gov/licensing/ for more information).

How? To take the course you must submit a FGCU Post-Baccalaureate Non-Degree Application to the Office of Graduate Admissions, provide proof of prior master’s degree in counseling or a related field (transcripts) and documentation of any counseling certification or license held in Florida or any other U.S. state, if applicable.  This is the same documentation needed to apply for admission to the full certificate program.  For information, see http://www.fgcu.edu/Graduate/applicant-types.html.

Questions? For more information: contact Dr. Molli Bachenberg, mbachenberg@fgcu.edu or 239 590-7798 or counselingprogram@fgcu.edu, 239-745-4723 or me for information about the program or to register for the fall course.  Space will be limited.

Regards,

Madelyn L. Isaacs, Ph.D.
Professor and Chair
