Gulfcoast South AHEC's Public Health Education Internship

Gulfcoast South Area Health Education Center (GSAHEC) envisions healthy communities where every person has access to quality care. Our mission is to provide health education that improves the well-being of the communities we serve.  Through our work, we connect students to careers, professionals to communities and communities to better health. Our goal is to inspire, train, recruit and retain a diverse and broad range of health professionals to practice in communities where the need is greatest.

GSAHEC is a not for profit organization affiliated with the University of South Florida AHEC Program. GSAHEC was established in 1995 and serves Charlotte, DeSoto, Manatee and Sarasota counties. We are part of a larger, statewide network, the Florida AHEC Network, which includes five AHEC Programs and 10 Centers covering all 67 counties of the state. We are also an active member of the National AHEC Organization, which supports AHEC Programs and Centers that operate in almost every state and the District of Columbia.

This Public Health Education Internship is designed to provide health professions students interested in working with rural and medically underserved populations a chance to use their public health knowledge, contribute their ideas and skills, and observe and assist with GSAHEC programming.  The public health education intern works with health professionals, students, and community and academic partners to ensure successful program experiences.

Unmasking the Epidemic Virtual Event

https://www.facebook.com/events/1275437766169673/

Thursday, March 18, 2021 at 6:30 PM EDT – 8 PM EDT
Price: Free · Duration: 1 hr 30 min
Public Anyone on or off Facebook
Join the SWFL community on MARCH 18 in uniting as one voice for the thousands of children struggling with mental health issues during this FREE virtual event. This event is your first step in providing hope for thousands of children who desperately need access to mental health care in your back yard.
It is no secret that COVID-19 has greatly impacted our community, businesses, nonprofits, and families. The isolation and uncertainty have also led to long-term mental health implications. Our children are suffering and keeping up with the growing demand is a challenge. Through generous donations, strategic planning and collaboration with community partners, access to care is increasing across the region, though the need continues to surpass available resources.
Our community is facing a mental health epidemic, and it is only going to get worse unless we come together to show our children they are not alone.
Please dedicate 1-hour on March 18 as we unmask the mental health resources available to your family, unmask the faces of local youth who are advocating for enhanced access to mental health care, and unmask the change desperately needed for our children.

CBT for Teens: Simple Strategies from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Teenagers in the Pandemic

 Source: https://iscainfo.com/Webinars

February 17, 2021 @ 12:00-13:00  GMT

One of a school counselor’s most important jobs is to help our students make choices and practice behaviors that are positive and healthy. By examining the relationships between thoughts, feelings and behaviors with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy strategies counselors can do just that.

Never before, however, have counselors had to be so creative in finding new ways to bring counseling techniques into a school setting. We often have only a few sessions with students, and now we have to connect and build coping skills ONLINE too!

This brief workshop will help school counselors working with adolescents compassionately use a five part CBT model to help teens change negative thought patterns to positive ones and teach young people that they are capable of handling anything that comes their way.  We will take a special look at how these strategies can be used online and in the context of the pandemic.

Participants will learn:

  • What is CBT and why is it effective for teens

  • How to use a CBT 5 part model

  • How can it be used in a school setting

  • Tools and strategies that can be used online and in person
