FMHCA October Webinar: Importance of Legislative and Grassroots Lobbying and the Current State of the LMHC Scope of Practice

Date: Friday, 10/23/15, 2:00-4:00 pm

Presenter: Corinne Mixon, DPL

Description: The Florida Legislature is made up of individuals that come from varied professional backgrounds. For instance, it would not be uncommon for a legislator to oversee an orange grove one year and then be chairing the House Committee on Health Quality a year later. If these legislators are not educated on the LMHC profession, the scope of practice may be threatened. Legislative and grassroots lobbying seek to provide this education to Florida's elected officials. Corinne will explain what lobbying is, why it is important and how LMHCs can become their own lobbyists. Additionally, Corinne will discuss the current state of the LMHC practice, currently filed bills that will affect LMHCs and how mental health counselors can work with their State Representatives and Senators to enhance their legislative platform.

Learning Objectives: As a result of the course, attendees will understand:
(1) Legislative lobbying and Grassroots lobbying
(2) The timeline of the legislative process
(3) Elections
(4) Key bills for FMHCA
(5) How the practice of LMHCs relates to the practice of psychology, clinical social work and marriage and family therapy and how these professions are perceived to state officials

About the Presenter: Corinne graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in public relations. It was during this time that Corinne recognized her deep interest in statewide and federal legislation. She became determined to become a citizen of the State of Alabama, so that she qualified to intern for U.S. Congressman Richard Shelby, Chairman of Banking and Insurance. After concluding her internship, Corinne began her professional career as a Public Relations Account Manager for the Zimmerman Agency, the then-largest hospitality centered communications group in the nation and the largest advertising corporation in Florida. Corinne joined the Mixon and Associates lobbying because of her skills in client-centered communication and administrative policy. Corinne is now Principal at Mixon and Associates where she lobbies for an array of clients ranging from fortune 500 companies and large statewide associations to tech-based-startups and public school districts. However, Corinne specializes in lobbying for statewide health care associations including: the Florida Mental Health Counselors Association, the Independent Funeral Directors of Florida (IFDF), the Florida Veterinary Medical Association, the Florida Academy of Physician Assistants and the Florida State Oriental Medical Association. Corinne also served as the Executive Director of IFDF where she expanded her expertise into association management. Corinne also focuses on political campaigning, including managing the campaign for Senate for past Speaker Pro Tempore, Rep. Dennis Baxley and working in various other House and Senate races. Corinne manages a multitude of political action committees (PACs) on behalf of Mixon and Associates' clients. As the PAC manager, she oversees the delivery of approximately $160-thousand dollars worth of campaign contributions per election cycle. Corinne hand-delivers many of these contributions directly to the candidates; thus, providing a benefit to clients with-and-without their own political action committees.
