Informational Meeting for becoming a counselor

The next informational meeting for prospective graduate students is on Monday September 19th, 2016 at 5pm in Merwin Hall 231. We will overview both the School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health counseling programs.

The board members of the Association for Child and Adolescent Counseling (ACAC) are proud to present:

The ACAC Conference Committee is now accepting proposals for their inaugural conference on July 20 ­ 21, 2017. The conference theme is “Trauma in Child and Adolescent Counseling.” This theme is aligned with that of American Counseling Association’s (ACA) incoming president, Gerard Lawson. We are seeking conference proposals for all ages groups (i.e., birth-five, school age, and adolescence) in all settings (schools, community mental health, private practice, and supervision) for all levels (beginners, intermediate, and advanced). All accepted presenters will need to register for the ACAC conference. Travel costs are not paid by ACAC. Details on this process will be sent once your proposal is accepted. Once your proposal is accepted, you will be asked to submit a curriculum vitae. 

We are accepting proposals until October 1, 2016. Please submit your proposal applications here.

JOB DESCRIPTION:	To provide direction, leadership, coordination, supervision and clinical support to school-based counselors and health and wellness team members.  Direct and manage comprehensive PreK-12 counseling programs to promote and support academic success and personal well-being of all students in the district.
REQUIREMENTS:	Master’s degree in school counseling, counseling or related field. 7 years of experience in school counseling, counseling or related field.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:	Directs and manages the development and implementation of comprehensive school counseling programs aligned with the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) National Model in all district schools Responsible for college and career readiness throughout the district including the supervision of the college and career readiness counselors, FAFSA Completion Project and all other college and career readiness activities K-12. Assists with the hiring, supervision and evaluation of all school counselors to ensure implementation of data driven, equity focused comprehensive counseling programs Provides training and support necessary for school counselors. Supervises the activities of the department in accordance with the district’s policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include: Hiring, supervising, training and evaluating district-level Counseling Department staff. Ensures departmental compliance with policies established by federal and state law in the area of counseling and guidance. Coordinates the preparation, presentation and distribution of guidance publications and information for counselors, administrators, parents and students. Develops and maintains positive working relationships and collaborates effectively with other district departments, outside agencies and institutions to provide appropriate counseling and guidance programs and services for students. Maintains a communication system that effectively collects and disseminates information about students to other district departments as appropriate. Serves as a district liaison for post-secondary institutions, community organizations, the city and the state, for all counseling related and career/college readiness initiatives. Develops and facilitates role clarification of site-based health care providers in the district. Serves as a member of the leadership team in the Student, Family and Community Supports Division. Oversees Student Led Conferences and Advisory district wide. Plans and coordinates implementation of the Health and Mental Health programs and services district wide. Provides technical assistance to school administrators regarding counseling program development, staff evaluation and effective use of time. Oversee and provides ongoing supervision and training for the district crisis team and serves as the liaison for all crisis with district leadership. Prepares and administers departmental school counselor budget including oversight and expense approval. Maintains current knowledge of exemplary programs, best practice and services in the counseling field. Keeps abreast of developing issues, trends and materials for school counselors and disseminates information to staff and other district personnel. Performs all other tasks and duties as assigned.
PREFERENCES:	Valid New Mexico License in School Counseling or related field. Strong background and understanding of the school counselor’s role in college/career readiness, ASCA National Model, school counseling to close the achievement gap, equity and access issues, data and accountability, advocacy, collaboration, leadership for systemic change and the transformed role of school counseling. Demonstrated knowledge of counseling techniques, school counseling programs, student appraisal, career development, cultural diversity and community resources available to students. Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of testing and measurement which underlie standardized testing program development. Demonstrated ability to articulate the district’s mission and goals in the area of guidance and counseling to the community and to solicit its support in realizing the mission. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written. Flexibility, organization, decision-making and problem solving skills. Interpersonal skills with diverse populations in-person, electronically and on the telephone. Ability to meet deadlines, work on multiple projects, and coordinate the work of others. Knowledge of District policies on immunization, medication, first aid, emergencies and child abuse/neglect. Knowledge of all laws, regulations and guidelines affecting counselors, teachers and students. Knowledge of effective classroom management techniques. Ability to maintain positive relationships with students, parents, community members and staff. Experience in grant writing, management and report.

This article identifies potential barriers to wellness and self-care for counseling students. Implications for counselor education programs, including suggestions on
removing barriers to wellness, are discussed.

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Office of Continuing Education & Off-Campus Programs at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) presents Solution Focused Brief Counseling and Consultation (SFBC), a workshop targeted principally at school counselors, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, human services professionals and educators. SFBC uses a systematic, five-step approach in which clients, students and parents focus on solutions rather than problems. It's not just postpartum, and it's not just depression.

Historically, much of the research on women's mental health related to pregnancy has been on depression that occurs after the birth of a baby. But, we know now—it's not just the postpartum period, and it's not just depression. Women experience depression and anxiety, as well as other mental health conditions, during pregnancy and after the baby is born. These conditions can have significant effects on the health of the mother and her child. This initiative is designed to educate consumers and health care providers about who is at risk for depression and anxiety during and after pregnancy, the signs of these problems, and how to get help.
