Southern Connecticut State University

SouthernConnecticut State University (SCSU) seeks a visionary and innovative leader to serve as Director of Counseling Services. As an intentionally diverse and student-centered university, Southern Connecticut State University is committed to academic excellence, access, social justice, and service for the public good. Founded as a teachers college in 1893, Southern has evolved over the past century into a comprehensive university offering 114 graduate and undergraduate programs in the liberal arts and professional disciplines. It is one of four universities in the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities System.  The University is located in New Haven, a city rich with arts and culture, and less than 90 miles from New York City and 140 miles from Boston.

The Director of Counseling Services will provide strategic and transformational leadership to develop and implement a comprehensive program of developmental therapeutic psycho-educational and outreach/preventative counseling and psychological services to the University community.  Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs/Dean ofStudents, the Director will provide leadership and supervision to the Counseling Center staff, facilitate student referrals to community providers, serve as a member of the Student Affairs case review team, plan and conduct staff/faculty training programs, and work cooperatively with other offices responsible for the delivery of support services to students.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with the changing demographics and counseling needs of current and future students; understand mental health barriers that impede students’ progress to graduation; possess expert knowledge of best practices in college counseling services; and demonstrate success in developing new programs.  The preferred candidate will bring significant experience working collaboratively across campus, a strong team orientation, and success developing and supervising professional staff.  Additionally, the position requires keen organizational skills with an ability to manage multiple tasks, effective communication skills, both orally and in writing, and effective engagement of multiple stakeholder groups.  

Qualified applicants must possess a doctorate in clinical or counseling psychology or a related field, and Connecticut licensure or eligibility for Connecticut licensure.  Five years of experience in counseling, including formulation and implementation of counseling services policy and staff supervision are required.

Salary:  $80,000 to $100,000 depending on experience
Location: Bejing or Shanghai (PAU does not pay relocation or Visa expenses for living in China)

PAU is seeking a highly motivated visionary trained in counseling or related field to direct the marketing, recruiting and student support services for students in the China Cohort within PAU’s Global Online M.A. Counseling Program.  This position will also have cultural contextualization curriculum responsibilities, and oversight of supervision of on-the-ground clinical training.  Candidates ideally have a Ph.D. in Counseling or related field with experience working within the counseling profession. Responsibilities include:

·       Program Development, Growth, and Vision to include:
o   Provide overall leadership for China based marketing, recruiting and enrollment growth.
o   Develop China Strategic partnerships and local site liaisons to develop student enrollment.
o   Negotiate, maintain and expand partnerships with relevant institutions in China where PAU students can receive on-the-ground clinical training, with a special emphasis on developing a practicum site in Shanghai to support our growing student body in this city.
o   Work with PAU faculty, staff, and administration to ensure access to the learning management platform, library resources, and textbook access to deliver a high quality education.
o   Work with the China GACE Core Faculty Support in organizing a series  of yearly “on the ground” intensive clinical training events using core faculty and China adjuncts
o   Ensure that PAU on-the-ground student services are working with China laws and regulations

·       Academic and Curriculum Contextualization
o   Develop and deliver curriculum highlights on a quarterly basis
o   Teach one course a year
o   Evaluate and provide program effectiveness for continuous improvement

·       Clinical Supervision Oversight
o   Recruit and oversee on-the-ground clinical supervisors in China to supervise students in alignment with CACREP standards
o   Provide clinical supervision equivalent to 10 units per year


—  Student Advising & Retention:   Continue to demonstrate the effectiveness of a 21st century blended model of advising that combines use of internet technology and in-person, on-the-ground contacts, with a target of conducting on-the-ground Orientation and talking with each student in person or online at least once per quarter.
o   Strive for 90% retention
o   Coordinate online curriculum highlights
o   Weekly online office hours

·       GACE Faculty/Instructor Recruitment and Administration
o   Work with the China GACE Core Faculty to recruit local instructors.

·       Qualifications:
o   Ph.D. in Counseling, Counseling Psychology, or Psychology
o   Experience building programs, recruiting students
o   Ability to establish relationships with clinical sites in China
o   Fluent in English and Mandarin
o   Experience supervising students and overseeing supervisors

In Orlando, Michelle Obama calls counselors key to school success

School counselors have one of "the most underappreciated jobs" in the country but are key to in the White House's goal to have more students pursue education after high school, first lady Michelle Obama said Tuesday in Orlando.

"You're the one planting the seeds about college" and creating a climate where "higher education is the expectation, not the exception," Obama told hundreds of counselors at an annual convention.
