Trends in High School Dropout and Completion Rates

Trends in High School Dropout and Completion Rates High school status completion rates increased from 83.7 percent in 1973 to 92.0 percent in 2013 among 18- to 24-year-olds, according to a new report. In the same time period, the gap in completion rates between White youth and Black and Hispanic youth narrowed, although the gaps remain. The National Center for Education Statistics released Trends in High School Dropout and Completion Rates in the United States: 2013 today (October 25), which draws on a wide array of surveys and administrative datasets to present statistics on high school dropout and completion rates at the state and national levels. Other key findings from this year's report are: Between October 2012 and October 2013, approximately 508,000 youth (ages 15- to 24) left school without obtaining a high school credential. These "event dropouts" accounted for 4.7 percent of the 10.9 million 15- to 24-year-olds enrolled in grades 10 through 12; The status dropout rate—the percentage of 16- to 24-year-olds who are not enrolled in school and have not earned a high school credential—varied by racial/ethnic group. As measured by the American Community Survey, the 2013 status dropout rate was lower for youth who were Asian (2.5 percent), White (4.7 percent), Pacific Islander (5.0 percent), and of Two or more races (5.2 percent) than it was for those who were Black (9.0 percent), Hispanic (11.8 percent), and American Indian/Alaska Native (12.8 percent); and The gap in high school status completion rates between White and Black youth narrowed from 15.4 percentage points in 1973 to 6.5 percentage points in 1990, showed no measurable change from 1990 to 2000, and fell again from 8.1 percentage points in 2000 to 2.8 percentage points in 2013. The White-Hispanic gap in status completion rates showed no clear trend between 1973 and 2000, but fell from 27.7 percentage points in 2000 to 9.3 percentage points in 2013. Spectrum Recovery Solutions offers a holistic approach to mental health.  In keeping with our holistic approach, we offer QEEg (Qualitative Electro-Encephalography) Neurocognitive rehabilitation services to our clients, for whom this therapy is appropriate.  We have a part-time position available, as a training technician/coach.  

This job involves:  traveling to two different training sites in Estero and Naples; preparing and operating equipment to deliver training sessions; preparing client scalp and placement of electrodes to skin surface; explaining various components of the training process to clients; troubleshooting and correcting technical issues that may arise; entering notes for each session; communicating with clinical director and training monitor; other duties as may be assigned.  12-24 hours per week is estimated.  Pay is $20 per client hour.

Ideal candidates will possess the following qualifications:

College degree

Ability to communicate effectively with clients and staff

Ability to quickly learn and retain new concepts and terminology

Ability to comprehend technical language relating to QEEg

Ability to comprehend and explain processes to clients

Moderate to advanced knowledge of PC operations (Windows10)

Ability to work independently

Possess reliable transportation

Be able to maintain a flexible schedule, including evenings to 9PM, and possible weekend hours, responsive to client needs.

Comfortable with hands-on placement of electrodes to clients’ scalp surfaces

Student Nike collaborator back on national stage

When Matthew Walzer speaks, important people listen.

His impassioned plea to Nike for shoes designed for people with physical challenges went viral in 2012 — remember #NikeLetter? — and sparked the athletic-gear giant to “just do it.” He collaborated with the company on the design of a groundbreaking easy-entry sneaker, was flown to Los Angeles for the product launch in July 2015 — meeting NBA superstar LeBron James in the process — and ended up in a national media spotlight.

The 20-year-old FGCU junior was back at in September at the Design For All Showcase in Washington, D.C. Walzer had the ear of the fashion industry at The White House, where he spoke on a panel about designing apparel and assistive technology for people with special needs.

Doctor of Education Program Information

The College of Education at FGCU will begin a new cohort of students for the Doctor of Education program in the fall of 2017 with two concentrations: Curriculum & Instruction and Educational Leadership. We also have cognate and elective classes in Higher Education for those working in colleges and universities careers.

The Curriculum and Instruction concentration will meet the career needs of educators who work in higher education institutions and those who work in Pk-12 schools in areas such as staff development, program coordination, and curriculum development, leading to such job titles as Curriculum Specialist, Director of Elementary and Secondary Programs, and Reading Specialist.

The Educational Leadership concentration will prepare individuals to become agents of change in organizations as leaders among the ranks of principals, superintendents, and chief executive officers.

This faculty in our EdD program are:

·         Nationally recognized faculty who have held leadership positions in K-12 schools and higher education institutions.

·         Faculty who have held elected leadership positions in state, regional and national professional organizations.

·         Faculty members who use innovative instructional methods.

·         Faculty members, who are research scholars, have published major textbooks, and who are well-published in national and international journals.

Admissions requirements include a master’s degree, a score on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), three letters of recommendation from supervisors, and an interview. The deadline for applications will be open, however, we would prefer applications submitted by January 15, 2017.

The conference agenda will include keynote speaker, Dr. Joseph Hendershott, the nationally recognized expert on childhood trauma and founder of Hope for the Wounded (http://hope4thewounded.org). Differentiated breakout sessions for early childhood, mental health, and best practices for pre-K-12 will be offered.
