Florida CAN announces College Ready Florida initiatives     Schools, districts, communities can register now to host college access initiatives during 2016-17 school year   Tampa, FL – Florida College Access Network (Florida CAN) is pleased to announce the official launch of College Ready Florida, a suite of statewide initiatives  designed to build a college-going culture and help all high school students—especially low-income students and those who are the first in their families to go to college—continue their educations beyond high school. “Florida’s most valued resource is our students,” said Laurie Meggesin, Executive Director of Florida CAN.  “The College Ready Florida initiatives ensure our students have the knowledge, resources and support they need to plan and be successful in the postsecondary or career training that helps them reach their potential.” Over the past year, in partnership with schools, districts and community organizations, Florida CAN successfully piloted three programs that aim to boost college-going rates for high school seniors:   Apply Yourself Florida (Florida College Application Week), part of the American College Application Campaign, aspires to position every graduating senior to apply to at least one postsecondary institution (2-year or 4-year college, certificate program, or vocational school). Schools and communities select any week during the month of October to coincide with the application deadlines for some universities. Florida FAFSA Challenge strives to boost the number of Florida seniors completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which helps students qualify for financial aid like Pell Grants to pay for their college expenses. The challenge encourages all Florida schools and districts to set a FAFSA completion goal 5% higher than their rate of last year, or alternatively, set a goal that better fits their school’s unique circumstances. The next Florida FAFSA Challenge begins when the 2017-18 FAFSA application opens on October 1, 2016. Florida College Decision Day, Florida’s adoption of the First Lady Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher Initiative’s College Signing Day, recognizes and celebrates high school seniors for their postsecondary plans and encourages all students to prepare early for college. Florida College Decision Day is held annually on or around May 1st to coincide with the date most seniors inform colleges of their plans to enroll. Dual Majors: Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling at FGCU

The Counseling Department offers an opportunity to earn a single M.A. degree with both the Clinical Mental Health Counseling major and the School Counseling major. Students must meet initial admissions requirements of both programs to qualify for this option. Students may elect the dual major option at any time after admission to one of the programs and prior to the M.A. degree being awarded. Students initially admitted into the School Counseling major will take an additional 27 credits. Students initially admitted into the Clinical Mental Health Counseling major, will take an additional 15 - 21 credits depending on their prior educator preparation. Students must complete all degree requirements for both majors including passing all subsections of the FTCE, General Knowledge, Professional Educator Examination and the Guidance and Counseling Subject Area Exam prior to graduation. DESCRIPTION OF JOB AND CORTEZ COMMUNITY

The job description includes providing classroom guidance lessons, small group and individual solution focus meetings with students. The individual hired will be collaborating with our team of staff to address student needs on the Child Study team. The school counselor will also refer students to community agencies if he/she would benefit from more intensive supports. The position requires utilizing data driven and research based practices to demonstrate effectiveness. The school counselor may also build schedules and coordinate the PARCC (standardized) assessment. 

Cortez, Colorado, located near the Four Corners,  rest on the fringe of desert with the altitude at 6200. The climate is consider mild throughout the year and encompasses amazing outdoor recreation activities. Phil's World and Boggy Draw are a great trails for mountain bikers. Hiking trails surround the area including Mesa Verde/Hovenweep National Monument, and Sand Canyon/Canyon of the Ancients. Spend some time rafting, canoeing, fishing or paddleboarding on the Dolores River, Summit Lake, McPhee Reservoir or other bodies of water in the area.  Cortez Parks and Recreation is also a great place to swim, weight train or participate in fitness classes.

• Attend faculty and team meetings;
• Supervise lunch and other recess breaks;
• Pursue appropriate professional growth & development
Requirements:
• Graduate degree in counseling, clinical psychology, social work, or other applicable field
• Five years’ experience in a relevant environment
• Current license and/or credential as a clinical social worker, psychologist, school counselor or related field
• Knowledge of and ability to apply best practices from the mental health field in a school setting
• Demonstrated commitment to the mission and core values of the school
• Highly effective verbal and written communication skills
• Collaborative and team-oriented approach to problem-solving
